Ronda Murphy, a dog rescue owner, has been sentenced to four and a half years in jail after admitting guilt to multiple charges of cruelty to companion animals. The conviction stems from a distressing discovery on her property in Madison Township, Ohio, in July 2023, where authorities found numerous dogs in dire conditions.

The court’s decision includes not only a prison sentence but also a financial penalty for Murphy. Judge Noah Powers ordered her to pay over $16,000 in restitution to the Animal Friends Humane Society, which undertook the care of the dogs rescued from her property. When authorities raided Murphy’s property, they seized 92 dogs, many in appalling states of neglect, and uncovered 18 more dogs that had died, their bodies left in various stages of decay.
The case, presented in court, highlighted the severe mistreatment these animals endured. The prosecution disclosed that two of the deceased dogs had been autopsied, revealing death by starvation. Furthermore, authorities found living dogs trapped in cages littered with feces and urine, while the deceased were in non-functioning freezers.
Despite Murphy’s tearful expressions of regret in court, her prior actions led to significant suffering. She implored for understanding, stating her daily torment over the fate of the animals and her hopes for their well-being wherever they are now. However, the judge rejected her lawyer’s plea for probation — per Fox19.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Powers emphasized the gravity of Murphy’s neglect and the inexcusable suffering it caused to the animals. “You obviously knew that there were dogs dying out there and you didn’t do anything about it,” the judge told Murphy. “I mean, just the most horrible case of neglect in this case and if you’re a person that believes in God, these are God’s creatures.”
The court ruled definitively against her ever owning companion animals again, marking a firm stance against animal cruelty and neglect.
