Is My Dog Happy? – DogTime

I love my dog so much, but I find myself worrying that I’m not doing enough for her. I constantly question, “Is my dog happy?” And equally important: does she know how much I love her?

You are not alone in asking and wondering if your dog is happy and if your dog knows that you love her. These are among the most common questions of pet parents.

The true nature of dogs is one of unconditional love and joy. Dogs don’t quantify love, they simply love. So when you ask, “Does my dog know how much I love her?” a dog has no reference for that question. Even when they experience abuse they can still hold a space of unyielding love. Even when dogs experience the most cruel and horrifying conditions, they can still heal and and open up to love and care.

“Is my dog happy?” has a similar universal dog answer. Dogs are, by nature, happy creatures. What is important to them is to be with their pack, which can be human or canine or both.

It is likely that your dog loves you endlessly, but she experiences stress and anxiety when she is separated from you. When she is with you, she is likely ecstatic. If it’s possible to have her spend time with a family member while you are at work, that would be great. Even better would be if you could take her to work with you! Having her go to a dog day care is another alternative. Though she would have canine companionship more than human companionship, she will likely feel happier there than home alone. Adding another dog or a feline friend to the family may also be a solution.

Finally, when you are at home, make sure you spend quality time with your dog. Take her on long walks, play a game of fetch, teach her new tricks, or simply cuddle up together to stengthen your bond.
