An animal rescue in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, is currently caring for an Australian Shepherd Mix dog, found abandoned in a garage without basic necessities. The rescue center — Speranza Animal Rescue — believes the owner of the 4-year-old left the pup to die. Pennsylvania police are investigating the incident and hope to apprehend the owner, as abandonment is an act of animal cruelty.
Abandoned Australian Shepherd mix dog left without food, water, or heat
On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Speranza Animal Rescue and Pennsylvania police received a report of the severely emaciated pup left alone in a garage at a property in the Harrisburg area – per KION 46 News. She had no food, water, or source of heat.
Thankfully, Speranza Animal Rescue took in the poor pup — named Ramona — the same day. They’re focused on helping her fully recover before putting her up for adoption. Ashly Maurice, the rescue’s dog coordinator, believes the pup had a previous owner who clearly left her behind.
“So, the police will follow up on the fact that someone had done this. They are the ones who removed her from the home,” Maurice said in a statement.
For now, the animal rescue’s priority is to give the abandoned dog all the care and love she needs.
“Obviously, she likes treats and food, but we’re keeping that to a very minimum,” Maurice explained, adding, “She’s on a strict feeding schedule because when dogs are this severely emaciated, you can only feed them very small portions at a time.”
Staff at the rescue describe Ramona as a “sweet and friendly pup” who deserves a loving forever home. Moreover, they aim to learn more and more about her charming personality before putting her up for adoption.
“Eventually, she’ll be up for adoption once we get to know her more and know her personality,” an optimistic Maurice stated.
