Dog finds unexploded military weapon while digging in their backyard

According to WWNYTV 7News, the Florida canine made the rare discovery on Mar. 20. The dog’s owner, Matthew Sims, said he was in the backyard playing with his child when he came across something sticking out on the ground. His dog had been digging in that spot. As he tried to pull the mysterious object out of the ground, it suddenly dawned on him that it, was, in fact, a military weapon.

“You couldn’t tell what it was until you started to pull it up,” Sims shared. “Once I got it halfway out, I was like, ‘Oh, I know what this is, let me gently put this back down.’”

Sims further revealed: “It was like buried at least six inches deep. But then like half of it or at least two inches up.”

Immediately, Sims reported the discovery of the mysterious military weapon. He told authorities it “had fins in the back, has rusted metal and it was shaped like a torpedo” as per Yahoo News reporting. Shortly after, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and other units, including the bomb squad, arrived at the scene.

Authorities established that the unexploded military bomb had been underground for decades, owing to how decayed it was. Wasting no time, they evacuated residents living nearby before removing the weapon from Sims’ property.

Carla Smith, a neighbor, witnessed the bomb squad swinging into action. Surprisingly, she said the discovery did not scare her.

“To me, it was interesting to watch,” Smith stated. “They did their thing, and they were out of here in minutes.”
